Wood Burning Stove Fitting

With the current emphasis on flue safety, in particular the dangers of carbon monoxide, it is essential (not to mention a legal requirement) that you protect your home and family by using a competent person (i.e. HETAS approved) to install an accredited system to line your chimney.

Barrs Chimney Sweeps will be able to advise you of the best solution to your chimney problems given our extensive experience and training. In addition to flue lining and chimney repairs, we can offer a complete range of services including advice, fireplace or appliance installation and fume assessment.

Chimney Lining Installers

1) The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. In the NBS tests, unlined chimneys allowed heat to move through the chimney so rapidly that the adjacent woodwork caught fire in only 3 1/2 hours.

2) Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick and mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. The flue gases are acidic in nature and literally eat away at the mortar joints from inside the chimney. As the mortar joints erode, heat transfers more rapidly to the nearby combustibles and dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide can leak into the living areas of the home.

3) Liners provide a correctly sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. Modern wood stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a correctly sized flue to perform properly.

In England and Wales, there are only two ways you can legally install a domestic solid fuel, wood or biomass burning appliance. You can either:

  • Use a registered installer who can self certify that the work he does complies with the relevant Building Regulations; or…
  • you apply to your local authority building control department for a building notice, and pay the appropriate fee (possibly up to £300).

It is generally much simpler and cheaper to use a HETAS registered installer who will leave you with a Certificate of Compliance as a record of the job and that it complies with Building Regulations. A copy of the certificate is forwarded to HETAS who notify the local authority on you behalf. Failure to notify the work through the registration scheme (in this case HETAS) or directly to the local authority can lead to enforcement. It can also cause problems for future house sales if there is no official record of a compliant installation.
